Company History

Company HistoryCompany History

In the Kansei era (1789-1801), a merchant from Omi, Giemon Okamoto, moved to Kyoto and established the kimono retail business, Omiya Giemon. The shop was originally located at the corner of Manjuji Street and Takakura Street, hence the name change to Kakuzen Okamoto. In 1950, Okazen Co., Ltd. was founded at Shijo-dori Fuyacho. In 1983, we moved to a new building facing Oike-dori. In 1992, we transformed the first floor into a boutique, establishing Fabric Okazen, and displayed traditional kimonos on the second floor. In 2009, we renovated to specialize in kimonos, with fashionable and traditional wear spread across two floors. Every spring, we handle the costumes for the maiko at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater.

Maiko costumes vary not only with the seasons in terms of materials and tailoring but also according to the occasion, much like regular kimonos. Special occasions like debut performances or New Year’s might require a black kimono with five crests, while the choice of colors and patterns can change with experience. Seasonally appropriate undergarments and lighter or unlined garments are used depending on the time of year. Similarly, geiko costumes follow these traditions. While modern patterns may often lack seasonal themes, traditionally, kimono wearers have greatly valued seasonal appropriateness, which is meticulously observed in the geisha and tea communities.
