NEWS

Our establishment dates back to the
Kansei era of the Edo period.
devoted exclusively to authentic Kyoto kimono,
including Kyo-Yuzen dyeing and Nishijin weaving.

The origin of our shop is located at the corner of Takakura Street and Manjuji Street in Kyoto. That is how our store name, “Yamakado,” is still being used to this day. Our specialty lies in creating and selling the costumes of maiko and geiko from Kyoto’s five hanamachi (Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, Miyagawacho, Pontocho, and Kamishichiken). For any inquiries regarding our products or purchases, and washing services (complete washing, partial washing, and stain removal), please contact us by phone call or email. We are happy to answer any questions regarding tailoring and dressing as well.

Ookini, We are Okazen.

Please note that the colors and patterns in the photos on our website may appear slightly different from actual colors of products. We have made every effort to represent the colors as accurately as possible, but we ask for your understanding in this matter. If you are considering to purchase, since our products are high-value items, we would be more than happy to provide a detailed explanation either in-store or during your visit. Please take your time to go through and look at each page at your leisure.

About costumes of Maiko

The costumes of Maiko differ not only in material and tailoring depending on the season, but also in appropriateness for different times, places, and occasions (TPO), similar to regular kimonos. For special occasions such as debut appearances (when a girl first becomes a maiko) or New Year’s, a formal black kimono with five family crests is worn. The choice of color and pattern also varies depending on the years of experience. Seasonally, the garments range from undergarments with a lining and padded hems, to lighter versions without padding under the hems, as well as single-layer kimonos with and without padding, unlined summer kimonos made of thinner materials, and others made of ro and sha fabrics, along with picture-patterned kimonos and small-pattern kimonos suited for different purposes. This applies to obi belts, obi ties, collars, and hair ornaments as well, and the same for Geiko.
